Education and Prevention
The mission of the HIV/AIDS and STD Program is to prevent the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), as well as to reduce the impact of these infections by coordinating countywide education, prevention, testing, and care services. We work in partnership with individuals, groups, and community-based organizations using a variety of strategies to link education, testing, counseling, and referral services with the health care.
HIV/AIDS Testing Services
Testing is available through the HIV/AIDS Program, STD clinic, and school-based health clinics.
Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Testing
We offer testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases at three locations throughout the County every week. Call 925-608-5350 to make an appointment. Contra Costa Health Services also provides STD and HIV education and testing to young people at various sites throughout the County.
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
PrEP is a once daily pill (prescription only) taken by an HIV negative individual that reduces their risk of HIV infection. Taken correctly, it is very effective at preventing HIV.
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
PEP is a month-long course of medications that an HIV negative individual takes after coming into contact with HIV to reduce their risk of becoming infected. It must be started within 72 hours after possible exposure.
Partner Services
HIV Disclosure assistance can help you talk with your partner about your HIV status. Call 925-313-6771 for more information or to schedule a private appointment.
Prevention with Positives (PWP)
Prevention with positives is one-on-one counseling that helps people with HIV make a plan to prevent transmission of HIV to others while maintaining their own health. Referrals to the program are made based on an individual's needs.
Needle Exchange
One for one needle exchange is available at locations throughout the County. Needle exchange provides clean syringes, condoms, health education, referrals, and harm reduction information to participants.
Non-Prescription Sale of Syringes
Non-prescription sales of syringes (NPSS) at local pharmacies are a powerful intervention for prevention of blood borne infections (namely HIV and Hepatitis B and C) among injection drug users and their sexual partners.
