Teens to Help Implement Environmental Justice Grant Awarded to Bay Point

A team of dedicated Bay Point teen leaders will soon be spreading out across their community to assess how residents would like to reduce the impact of environmental toxins on Bay Point, thanks to a new grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Bay Point is one of 48 communities nationwide to receive a Community Action for Renewed Environment (CARE) grant through a partnership with the EPA and University of San Francisco and in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The two-year, $90,000 grant will be augmented by EPA staff expertise and is intended to build a collaborative for reducing the impact of environmental toxins on Bay Point residents.

"We have heard in community forums that many residents have concerns about their air quality, water quality and other things," said Roxanne Carrillo, manager of Contra Costa Health Services' Healthy Neighborhoods Project. "The assessment by the teens will help the community focus more specifically on what changes and protections they want the most."

Community Health Organizer Wendy Jo Cervantes will be working with students from Gateway High School to ask the community about environmental concerns. "It's also an opportunity to expose them to potential environmental and public health career options," said Cervantes.

"A project will be chosen for the Bay Point Environmental Justice Collaborative to address," added Carrillo. "The purpose of CARE grants is specifically to use community engagement and capacity building to reduce the impact of environmental toxins within the local community."

Partners in the Bay Point Environmental Justice Collaborative include CCHS' Bay Point Family Health Center, Mt. Diablo Unified School District, La Clinica de La Raza, the Bay Point Partnership, the Center for Human Development, Todos Unidos and the Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Community Organization.

The Healthy Neighborhoods Project is part of the Public Health Outreach, Education and Collaboration Program in Contra Costa Health Services' Public Health Division.
